There is no doubt that a lying tongue is detestable– those who suppress Truth for their own advantage can cause irreversible damage. There is Scripture that states liars are an abomination, deserving of a fiery grave. One might think this punishment sounds a bit harsh– as many will argue, “what’s the big deal in a harmless white lie?” Is even this kind of lie the same magnitude– deserving the same punishment as one that affects, for instance, the global political spectrum?
Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, But those who deal faithfully are His delight. – Proverbs 12:22
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. – Revelation 21:8
Many will argue that a small mistruth is inconsequential in the grand scheme, being nothing more than a moment of self-preservation from the inconvenient vulnerabilities that present themselves from time to time. Must we always be so painfully honest during every emotional question concerning our well being? Are there justifiable moments in life where our emotional state is simply nobody’s business? We postulate that there is not a single circumstance where emotional vulnerability should be withheld, that all moments– no matter the size in scope– must be shared with our fellow man. We back this conclusion up with Divine Scripture.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. – Revelation 12:11
Our Testimony consists of our victories in Christ, how through Him we are able to tear down the strongholds of the Enemy and present evidence of triumph to our fellow man. Through our testimony we are able– through Christ– to build each other up, to bring about Hope to a hopeless situation. This process binds the Spirit of Fear and edifies those in communion, enabling a Spirit-filled revival on even the smallest scale– one that can permeate our surroundings with great ferocity. Our Truth-filled testimony is simply a moment of victorious vulnerability, that which the world so freely defines as weakness, and yet, has the exact opposite effect in conversation.
When one looks at the larger ramifications of a lying tongue (especially concerning the political spectrum), clarity comes to mind– in regards to a fiery judgement. The vast majority of our so-called “Career Politicians” could certainly be more accurately defined as “Career Liars”. These men and women seem to have such little concern about their deceitful actions that the Passage concerning a seared conscience brings forth a grand new light– those who cause the earth to sway and moan in agony as their selfish ambition brings global catastrophe on a mass scale. It seems that these who make a profession out of deceit come to a point where even they are unable to perceive their own corruption, being so convoluted in deception that Truth is but a distant apparition that seems truly unattainable.
As we take into account the two extremes of this detestable action, it becomes clear why this is such an abhorrent offense to the Author of Truth. Either the small misguided Truth, or the outright manipulation thereof, both emanate from the same source by which Death is bound– the Father of Lies, the Devil himself.
44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. – John 8:44
